So Your Dishwasher Is Not Cleaning Your Dishes (Or At Least Not Well Enough)

If you're having issues getting your dishes really clean, it could just be a very simple fix. If you've got white spots or food left after the cycle is complete we have a few tips for you below;

1. Your water coming into the dishwasher might not be hot enough. This could be for a very simple reason. If your water heater has some distance from your kitchen, this could be the problem. Think about when you turn the hot water on at your faucet - if it takes some time to get hot at your faucet then it will also takes the same amount of time to get that hot water to your dishwasher. The first main wash cycle is the most crucial to have correct water temperature. Try turning your faucet on hot and make sure the water is good and hot before turning on your dishwasher. Not only will it really help get the food on the dishes loose but it will also help break down the detergent.
2. Your water hardness may be the issue. If there is too much iron content in the water it may affect how the detergent breaks down as well.
3. If you've recently bought a newer dishwasher, try cutting back the amount of detergent that you're using. Most new dishwashers are manufactured to meet new and strict energy guild lines. They use so much less water that there is no need for a huge amount of detergent. Most of your "white spots" on the dishes is really detergent residue.
4. You may also want to try switching detergents. In recent years, detergent manufacturers have stopped or limited putting phosphates in detergents. Even if you've used the same dish detergent for years, your new dishwasher may not be wash as well with certain detergents. Certain brands like certain detergents better than others.
5. Be sure that you're using a rinse aid (EI: Jet Dry or Cascade). This will also help get the detergent off the dishes.
6. Check to be sure that your fill valve is working properly. If there is not enough water in the unit, it will not cycle properly. These units have small screens inside them that could also get plugged.
7. Check the fine or coarse filter at the bottom of the unit. Simply cleaning this will help ensure that the unit can get rid of any food particles or debris in the unit.

It could also be that the motor in your old dishwasher is going out. If that's the case, you might look into replacing that part or just replace the whole dishwasher is usually a cheaper alternative.
